Late Oldham Comeback Denies Downs Premier League Victory

Oldham 57–50 The Downs | Premier League Netball

The Downs were just seven minutes away from a valuable Premier League victory against Oldham, having led for most of a fiercely contested encounter before the home side staged a dramatic late comeback to secure a 57–50 win.

It was a fascinating, tense contest, with the teams trading goal for goal and neither able to establish a commanding advantage. So absorbing was the battle on court that spectators remained unusually quiet, seemingly captivated by the intensity of the unfolding match.

Despite facing an Oldham side strengthened by experienced players, Downs maintained their advantage through disciplined defensive play and determined attacking performances.

The defensive partnership of Ruby and Issy worked effectively, with good communication helping restrict Oldham’s attacking options and force their opponents wide. Making her Premier League debut, Ruby demonstrated her ability to compete at this level, with both players receiving the Coaches’ Player of the Match award from stand-in coach Swift.

At the attacking end, Cerys delivered an excellent shooting performance, maintaining impressive accuracy under pressure and providing the consistency that kept Downs ahead. Her contribution earned her Oldham’s Opposition Player of the Match award.

Giselle also impressed with her strength, composure and intelligent decision-making, while Phoebe made a positive impact from the bench during the second quarter.

With seven minutes remaining, Oldham began finding more direct feeds into their imposing goal shooter. The tactical change proved decisive, allowing the home side to overturn Downs’ lead.

Despite battling until the final whistle, Downs were unable to recover, eventually losing by seven goals and missing out on a losing bonus point.

Although disappointed to see victory slip away so late, Downs can take confidence from their performance against Premier League opposition.
